I have tried to remove weight, sometimes from people, sometimes from heavenly bodies, sometimes from cities above all I have tried to remove weight from the structure of stories and from language. The impulse for this essay struck hazily, one of those ideas that snuck in between pillow and sleep, or after too many coffees. None of these suggests digression that is, an ornamental or exploratory detour contained within a longer, straight-line progression. When Calvino sets out the qualities he believes literature must carry into the future-each one is the heading of a lecture-they include lightness, quickness, exactitude. It sounds like digression, but it is a little different. So much of what is written has quietly tried to refuse to be written, and yet, even great writers have pretended not to hear. But refusals, in any case, were his life in letters. The refusal was absolute Calvino died before he could deliver them. At the time of his death Calvino had finished all but the last lecture. The lectures were to be given in the fall of, and Memos was published in The memos are lectures on the values of literature that Calvino felt were important for the coming millennium. The lectures were originally written in Italian and translated by Patrick Creagh.
